Short answer: To convert JPG to PNG, drop the photo above, choose PNG and click Convert. PNG does not lose more quality when you save it again, but it cannot restore detail the JPG already lost, and the file will be larger.

People ask for PNG when they want to edit a picture, add it to a design or avoid saving the same file as a JPG again and again. Converting a JPG to PNG does exactly one useful thing: it stops any further loss from happening. It cannot bring back detail the JPG already threw away. This page performs the conversion in your browser, so photos stay on your device, and you can run a whole folder through it at once.

What does the conversion do, and what does it not do?

A JPG has already lost some fine detail when it was first saved. A PNG copy stores exactly the pixels that remain, nothing more. Do not expect sharper edges, cleaner colors or a restored original. What you gain is stability: open the PNG, edit it, save it again as PNG, and the picture will not degrade a little further each time, which is the usual problem with repeatedly saving JPG files.

What are good reasons to choose PNG?

Choose PNG when you will edit the picture in several rounds, when you want to place it on a transparent layer in design software, when you need a lossless copy for a presentation or document, or when the picture contains text and line art that must stay crisp after more saves. PNG files from photos are large, so for simply sharing a photograph, JPG or WebP remains the better format.

File size expectations

Expect the PNG to be much larger than the JPG, often several times larger for a photo. That is normal, because PNG keeps every pixel. If size matters, consider WebP, which gives small files and keeps transparency. The converter does not use the quality slider for PNG, since PNG is lossless by design. Use the resize options if you want fewer pixels and a smaller result at the same time.

A tip for editing safely

Start your editing session by converting the JPG to PNG once, then work only with the PNG until you are done. Export a final JPG only at the very end, for sharing. This way the picture is compressed by JPG just one extra time instead of every time you save. Name the files clearly, for example photo-edit, so you always know which one is the working copy. If you are removing a background, the PNG also lets you save the cut-out with a transparent area, which JPG can never do.

Questions people ask

Does converting a JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. It prevents further loss, but detail already removed by the JPG cannot be restored.

Why is my PNG so much bigger?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG discards detail. Photos can be several times larger as PNG.

Do my pictures leave my device?

No. Conversion happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Will converting a JPG to PNG remove the blocky marks?

No. PNG stores the picture exactly as it is, including any marks the JPG compression already made. It only stops new ones from being added when you edit and save again.

Can I get a transparent background by converting to PNG?

Converting alone does not remove a background. The white areas stay white. You need an editor to cut out the subject, then save as PNG to keep the transparency.
