Short answer: To convert WebP to JPG, drop the file above, choose JPG and click Convert. Transparent areas become white unless you pick another color in Advanced options. The conversion happens in your browser, with no upload.

You right-click an image online, save it, and discover that it is a .webp file your editor will not open. WebP is common on the modern web, but plenty of desktop programs, print services and upload forms still insist on JPG. This page converts WebP to JPG inside your browser, so the pictures you saved are never sent to a server, and you can handle a whole folder in one go.

Why do websites serve WebP?

Sites use WebP because it makes pages load faster. The same image takes less data than a JPG, which helps people on mobile connections and helps the site rank better. The downside lands on you when you save the picture, since the downloaded file carries the unfamiliar ending. The picture is perfectly fine; it just needs to be handed to your software in a format it knows.

What happens to transparency?

Some WebP images have see-through areas, like a logo or a sticker. JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas must be filled with a color. By default they turn white, and the page tells you so before you convert. If your picture will sit on a dark background, open Advanced options and choose a different background color. If you need to keep the transparent areas, convert to PNG instead.

Keeping quality in check

A WebP picture that was already compressed loses a little more when it is saved as JPG, because both formats discard fine detail. Keep the quality at 85 or above for photos and the extra loss is hard to see. Avoid converting back and forth between lossy formats many times, since each round trip adds small flaws. Keep the original WebP if you might need the best version later.

Saving pictures you find online

When you save a picture from a website and it arrives as WebP, you can often keep going by converting it here instead of searching for another source. Respect the picture's owner: conversion does not change who holds the rights, so use the result only in ways the owner allows. For your own uploaded images, keep the WebP from the site as the best copy and make JPGs only for programs that need them. Use a clear rename pattern so converted files do not get mixed up with the originals in the same folder.

Questions people ask

Why can I not open my downloaded .webp file?

Many desktop programs and older systems do not support WebP. Converting to JPG gives you a file they can read.

What happens to transparent areas?

They are filled with white by default. You can change the background color in Advanced options.

Is this converter free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and your WebP files stay on your device.

Why do images I save from some websites come out as WebP even when the link said .jpg?

Many websites send WebP to browsers that support it, even when the address ends in .jpg. Your browser saves what it actually received. Converting gives you a real JPG.

Does converting a WebP to JPG make it sharper?

No. Conversion can keep the detail that is there, but it cannot add detail that was lost when the WebP was made. Use a high quality setting so no more is lost.
